Our Journey: Where We Are at Right Now

We're still here at my mom's. Still waiting for the house to sell. Still saving money. Still planning. And somehow, despite getting rid of what feels like more than half of our life, we are also still drowning in STUFF. Not like we have so much stuff we don't know what we want to get rid of it, but we just don't know how to get rid of it. We've already decided what we're keeping and what needs to go. The problem is that 90% of the "needs to go" pile is still sitting in my mom's garage waiting for someone to buy it. As it turns out, yard sales are not exactly a booming industry when you live in the middle of nowhere.
At this point, I'm pretty close to throwing a giant FREE sign over top of the garage sale sign and calling it a day, because the thought of hauling it all to the closest thrift store (45 minutes away) might actually break me.
The house still hasn't sold either. I don't even want to get started on the anxiety of waiting on a sale to happen. But it also means we are in this weird in-between stage where we've made this huge decision, moved out, and completely changed our lives... Yet, we can't really make the next big move until the money from the house is actually there.
So, for now, we wait. And plan! We've been doing a whole lot of planning. If you're new here, this whole plan started with us deciding we simply wanted a different kind of life... and it went in a little bit of a different direction than we originally planned. You can read the beginning of our story below.
We're Still Trying to Figure Out What We'll Live In
We've been to what feels like all of the dealerships in the state - walking through different floor plans, different brands of RVs, old and new, trying to imagine what it would actually feel like to live in one full-time. And finding a rig that feels "right" for a 6 year old and an infant... isn't easy!
At first, we seriously considered a travel trailer. The price is appealing, towing seemed simpler, and there are quite a few really nice ones that we walked through. But the more we looked, the more we realized that full-time living would mean looking at the RVs a little differently.
Storage just isn't there in a travel trailer. And while we really don't have a lot of stuff, we still are going to be packing up our whole life, not just enough to get through the weekend.
So after a lot of walk throughs and a lot of debate, we are somewhere between a fifth wheel and a skoolie.
And the skoolie thing has really gotten into our heads.
I love how customizable they are. You can really set it up exactly how you want instead of depending on a manufacturer to produce the perfect set up for you. And I don't just mean floor plans - solar, water storage, off-grid systems, and storage exactly where you need it. Also, let's be honest: They just look cool.
We've thought about building one ourselves. We've also looked at partially and fully converted rigs. And we still aren't exactly sure which way we are going yet. Or if we are even choosing a skoolie for sure.
But the planning is continuing to happen anyhow.
The Dream Is Starting to Get More Specific
We're starting lists of places that we want to go. We're working on a rough map and schedule of what our first year on the road might look like - and it's really starting to come together.
We're also looking more seriously at jobs and work we can pick up along the way, especially seasonal jobs. And yes, we are absolutely going to be hitting up the sugar beet harvest. It's really all starting to start to feel... real!
It's not just a someday we can travel, but we are actually in the stages of planning to make it happen. It still feels like a dream sometimes - but we are starting to realize that we really can make our dreams reality.
Like... What if we spent next winter in Florida?
Which still feels crazy and totally dreamy all at the same time.
Right Now, It Still Looks Pretty Ordinary
That's the strangest part of this stage. From the outside, nothing looks all that different yet. We're just living with my mom, without an RV, and a house still on the market. Our life is half packed away and half scattered between the upstairs, downstairs, shed, and the piled high mess of a garage sale. There's stuff everywhere.
But behind all of that, the life we've been talking about, dreaming about, is slowly starting to take shape.
For now, we are saving, researching, making lists, and imagining exactly what this all will become. And honestly? That feels like progress.
